Today marks the last day of school for our little ones, and my heart is overflowing with emotion as I reflect on this past year in Reception. Each smile, each tiny triumph, and each precious moment has woven a tapestry of memories that I will cherish forever. It’s a bittersweet farewell, filled with both nostalgia and excitement for what lies ahead.
But as I grapple with my own feelings, I can’t help but think of the parents in Gaza. My heart aches for them as I try to fathom the unimaginable pain they are enduring. The stark contrast between our joyful milestones and their harrowing reality fills me with sorrow. While we celebrate the end of a school year and the promise of a bright future, they are navigating a landscape of fear and loss.
Since October 7, 2023, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has reported a devastating statistic: on average, a classroom full of children, between 35 and 45 innocent souls, has been killed every single day as a result of the ongoing conflict. Sam Rose, the Acting Director of UNRWA Affairs in Gaza, stated, “Every single day since the start of the war in Gaza, on average, a classroom full of children has been killed.”
These children are not just numbers; they had names, dreams, and futures. They had favourite subjects that ignited their curiosity, books that transported them to distant worlds, toys that sparked their imaginations, and favourite colours that brought them joy. They were full of hope, laughing as they played with friends, dreaming of what they could become. And in an instant, those dreams have been shattered.
As I cherish the sweet memories of our little ones today, I can’t help but hold space in my heart for those who will never get to experience the joy of a last day of school, the excitement of moving up a grade, or the thrill of chasing their dreams. Let that sink in.
